My practice

When I was told, that I will have a month for practice, I was confused because I couldn’t decide for a long time where I want to go and to perform practice, but after few days I found “ Seskines children day center” and I knew, that this place is exactly that what I’m looking for!
There are ten children two social workers and few volunteers. All the team is so grate, that from the very beginning we became friends. It’s small, calm and cozy place, full of laugh, scream and vitality.
First day was, probably, the most difficult of all. All children were so wild when we came there the first activity was a sport lesson we played football, but they liked it so much so that they remember it until now. And then we got back to day center and sat to do homework. It was not easy task for me, because I was so confused that I don’t remember anything from school and I started to ask how to do this and that, but it was a chance to remember mine lessons and in the end of practice I could do all these tasks easily! After homework we had dinner and then we had lessons of culinary, etiquette and art. So I was responsible for culinary lesson and we had a lot of fun during lessons. With children we were making snow men, pizza, desserts. After lessons we were playing games, cleaning day center and talking about day, if it was good or bad day. So it is our casual day.
Talking about my feelings and emotions, it wasn’t very easy, because at first children weren’t friendly and they weren’t listening to me, but after a week everything was getting better and I found a contact with those children. They wanted to do homework with me and to play, they started to respect and accept me and it was the best feeling, when I felt that somebody needs me and like me. Ofcourse there were days when I thought that I can’t handle anymore and I want to quit, but next morning I was waiting to go to day center again and again. Even now, when practice is over I’m planning to go there and to stay with children as volunteer, because I saw, that children need help and people who care about them.
So to sum up I can say, that I’m so grateful that I found that day center, where I found new friends and place where I want to come back and to see everyone as soon as possible.

Self- assesment of online listening to podcasts

This task, to listen for two podcasts, wasn't too difficult for me, because I was listening for ABC news podcasts, so the speaker wasn't talking too fast, but of course American accent is not easy understandable, but I spent four months in America this year, so it was very good experience and chance to improve my english skills and to learn American accent. But, however, every podcast I listened twice, just to make sure, that everything is clear now and that I was able to understand everything right. So, in my opinion, as I mentioned, because of spending four months in America I think that my ability to understand authentic speech is very good. But, of course, I can't say that I'm absolutely ready for my listening exam, because understanding, in my opinion, depends on situation, sometimes it might be record, that you won't be able to understand and sometimes it happens that listening is very easy, so I just can tell, that I'm almost ready, but I will try to practice as much as possible before my exam, by listening podcasts, watching English movies and television.
So in conclusion, I can say, that I’m quite successful in listening task and I hope after more practice I will get rally high score for it.

Homeless people

Every single day, everyone of us meet so many different people that we even don't remember them, because mostly they all are similar. Some of them are rich, well educated, some of them are a bit pourer, but at least they are clean, not hungry and wearing clothes. But have you ever noticed those people, who lives on the street, who have no home, no food, no money even no passport? Who are those "ugly" and derelict persons?
They all are called homeless people, who have no place to live, have no materials incomes and have no relatives, who could help him.
So now the question is how people become homeless? Specialists says, that there are a lot of situations that can lead to a person becoming homeless, such as divorce, the loss of a job, an addiction to, or abuse of, prescribed or illegal drugs or alcohol, or even gambling. People may also become homeless because of mental illness, although, as with drug or alcohol abuse. People who have served in the armed forces often find it impossible to cope with civilian life. Others may be running away from an abusive relationship.
Helping people who have become homeless is not always easy. One thing that surprises many who are new to working with homeless people is that some refuse help. This may be because his or her trust in people has been destroyed, often as a result of systematic emotional or physical abuse, or it may be because they have built up strong relationships with other homeless people.
It might be a long process to persuade a homeless person to come into the centre and use the primary services, let them to use the specialist services, such as health and housing. Each step, no matter how small, is very important, because after some time, those homeless people, who accept help might be back to normal civilized world and lead better life.
In conclusion I can say, that everybody of us should be very sensitive to this problem, which exist around us and realize that it might happen to any of us: homeless people come from all social backgrounds. Not all them sleep rough on the streets; many are insecurely housed, living in bed and breakfasts, short-stay hostels or sleeping on friends floors.

Autism

Everyone of us probably have heard about mental disabilities, but probably very few of us know what kind of illnesses can be and what are the difficulties with social interaction?
So, firstly, what is autism? Autism is a developmental disability that comes from a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain. It is characterized by the abnormal development of communication skills, social skills, and reasoning. Males are affected four times as often as females. Children may appear normal until around the age of 30 months. "Columbia Encyclopedia".
People, who have autism, can be very different and can have different mental disorders or behaviour disorders and it is very difficult to take care of them or to communicate.
People with autism may find difficulties recognizing or understanding other peoples emotions, feelings, and expressing their own, so these are main reasons why they find difficult to fit in society . People who have this disability usually are aggressive, prefer to spend time alone rather than seeking out the company of other people.
But fortunately there are a lot of specialists such as therapists, psychologists, social workers, who can help them overcome or adjust to many difficulties.
Therapists help to learn social skills, such as how to greet people, wait for a turn, and follow directions. Some people need special help with living skills. Others have trouble sitting still or controlling their tempers and need therapy to help them control their behavior. There is some kind of medicine to help disabled people to control their mood and behaviour, but there is no medicine for autism.
Students with mild autism sometimes can go to regular school. But most kids with autism need calmer, more orderly surroundings. They also need teachers trained to understand the problems they have with communicating and learning. They may learn at home or in special classes at public or private schools.
So in conclusion, as social worker, I can say that our society and all specialists who are working with persons who have autism, must be informed what kind of illness it is and how to behave with those people.

Employment Law

19th century can be called the beggining of employment law history.Through the industrialization a lot of workers began to inter-organize. In order to this, government started legislate rights and restrictions for workers. Later were developed sickness, unemployment and retirement insurances. In 20th century there were passed more legislations in work area, such as guarantied minimum wage, women and men discrimination and others. There are a lot of differences between employees and self-employed people, employees have more legal rights than self-employed. However, there are passed a lot of acts to protect all workers from sex and raise discrimination. In addition to this, there are EC law which sometimes gives better protection than English law. In EC law now are discussing about steady minimum wage, about days in which trading should not be allowed and about different rights to strike in different countries.Japan employment law has some differences from Western countries employment law.
In the end I can say that there are no country in the world which don't have employment law. Emploment law is a part of law which protects workers rights to work in normal conditions, to have social and medical insurance, that no one of them could be put- upon.

Choosing a Student exchange program to come to USA

As we all know there are many different programs which can help students to travel to US for working and travelling, but I will talk about one of them " Intrax work and travel USA".
This program is intended for students (full-timers). I'm one of those who decided to try it.
In my oppinion such programs is grate opportunity for all worlds students, who want to travel and to work to US. Student can work legally and after work he has 30 days for travelling, also it's grate opportunity to know their culture, to meet a lot of new friends. Also, it can be a grate test for you, wheather you are ready for reall life and for working and it can help you to value everything what do you have here, to value your own country and culture.
but, on the other hand, it can be a little bit risky, because you never know what you can expect in unknown country whith strangers, it can be even dangerous, but Intrax will help you if something happends.
So, to sum up, I can say that in my opinion such programs is very good chance for eveyone, to improve their language skills and to get experience, because I know few persons who had participated in this program not one year and tey are very happy about it, so I hope I will be happy as well, when I will come back to Lithuania.

Virginia tech: " as strong a place as it has always been"

The Virginia Tech massacre on april 16, 2007 was shocking new for all world. Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded dozens more before committing suicide, making it the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history.
First victim was shooted about 7:15 am and after few hours Cho did his work and killed other people and he killed him self.
Unfortunatelly, police, university's government were very irresponsible because they all had information about first victims, but actually they didin't do anything, in my opinnion, they had to inform students about what had happend, but they didn't, ofcourse it is too late to blame someone, but maybe if students were warned there wouldn't be so much victims.
But after this tragedy, we can be proud of those students who survived and now they are very solid family, it is incredible how strong they are and despite anything they apreciate their university, and as one profesor said " Now there are much more students who want to be a part of our society".
So, to sum up, I think that it is very painful but very real lesson, that US government must take care about gun control in their country.
